Victorian Food Recipes
Here at The Judge's Lodging we love Victorian food and cooking. Occasionally we even hold large Georgian & Victorian 5 course dinners, with around fifty dishes in each. Don't get the Curator talking about Victorian jellies - she's made loads and collects moulds. We're going to give our old ice-cream maker a go some time too (we're afraid we usually cheat by using a freezer). So, we love it so much we thought we'd share some of our favourite recipes with you. A Westminster Fool
Take a penny-loaf, cut it in thin slices, wet them with sack, lay them in the bottom of a dish, take a quart of cream, beat up six eggs, two spoonfuls of rose-water, a blade of mace, some grated nutmeg, sweeten to your taste. Put all into a sauce-pan, and keep stirring all the time over a slow fire for fear of curdling. When it begins to be thick, pour it into a dish over the bread, stand it till it is cold, and serve it up. Hannah Glasse
