Dining table at ChristmasSorry, but we don’t have a café on site - we try to cram as many interesting things for you to explore into the building instead!

What we do have is a nice comfy area to sit down, browse books, play games and have a nice cuppa. We have a great drinks machine where you can get a variety of teas, coffees and hot chocolate.

There are plenty of public houses, cafés and restaurants in the town to choose from if you are looking for something more substantial.  You can find information of some of them here.

We can provide light refreshments for pre-booked groups, so just ask us if you are planning a trip to us.

We love historical cooking here and sometimes have special events featuring old recipes, from Victorian dinners to demonstrations. Strange But True

  • list arrowHow did Victorians try out a new invention?

    Test it on the servants of course! That's what happened in 1860 at The Judge's Lodging, when gas lighting was put into the basement and not the Judge's rooms. They wanted to see if they got sick from the fumes. The servants were fine - that's why we got the lights working again.
