Explore the fascinating world of the Victorian judges at this award-winning historic house.

Dining table at ChristmasSorry, but we don’t have a café on site - we try to cram as many interesting things for you to explore into the building instead!

What we do have is a nice comfy area to sit down, browse books, play games and have a lovely cuppa. We hava great drinks machine where you can get a variety of teas, coffees and hot chocolate. There a selection of yummy biscuits to choose from too.

There are plenty of public houses, cafés and restaurants in the town to choose from if you are looking for something more substantial.  You can find information of some of them here and we will be happy to direct you to whatever you fancy.

We can provide light refreshments for pre-booked groups, so just ask us if you are planning a trip to us.

We love historical cooking here and sometimes have special events featuring old recipes, from Victorian dinners to demonstrations. If you would like to be put on our mailing list to hear of these and other events, please click here.  If you want to try some of the recipes we like for yourself, you can find some in the Recipes and Learning sections.

Strange But True

  • list arrowHow did Victorians try out a new invention?

Test it on the servants of course! That's what happened in 1860 at The Judge's Lodging, when gas lighting was put into the basement and not the Judge's rooms. They wanted to see if they got sick from the fumes. The servants were fine - that's why we got the lights working again.
